2017 Queenscliffe Literary Festival

Posted 11 May 2017

Entering its third year in May 2017, the Queenscliffe Literary Festival (QLF) is a boutique literary festival, now incorporating the long running community based “Sea of Words” festival, celebrating Australian author talent – both rising stars and acclaimed authors. With 15 curated events across the month of May at various venues in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale, the QLF features book readings, panel discussions and author talks, and provides cross-arts experiences such as music soirees and theatre performances, to bring text to life.

In 2017 our theme will be ‘Storytelling’, following diverse and successful themes of ‘Landscapes’ (2015) and ‘Journeys’ (2016).

The 2017 keynote speaker was acclaimed journalist Jennifer Byrne in conversation with Kate Torney, CEO State Library Victoria, at a sold-out event. Other forthcoming events include an evening with the most recent Miles Franklin-award winners, a crime fiction panel, Indigenous culture, art, science with Nobel Prize Winner Peter Doherty, philosophy and music.

Many of our events have been sold-out and range from intimate audience gatherings of 40 up to larger events of 120 people. The festival allows the regional audience of the Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong, Surfcoast and greater Victoria access to author events, and allows authors the opportunity to spend time on the Bellarine.

Past authors who have presented at the QLF include Geraldine Doogue, Robert Drewe, Don Watson, Anna Goldsworthy, Favel Parrett, Sally Hepworth, Joshua Funder, Gideon Haigh, Hannie Rayson, Robert Gott, Anna George, Christine Manfield, Ben Shewry, Danny Katz, Roland Harvey, Chrissie Perry and Michael Wagner.

The festival invites both city-based authors and regional authors to speak.

The QLF also features an incursion program for local primary schools and kindergartens. This is a free day-long event, connecting our youngest readers with authors and illustrators and inspiring them to READ, WRITE, DRAW more, and includes a variety of role plays, story ideas, storytelling, live drawing, and drawing activities.
