Beethoven, Schubert & Mark Deans
Posted 26 July 2017
LADY EATS APPLE has just returned from an extended tour to three of Europe’s leading Festivals: Theater der Welt (co-hosted by Thalia Theater and Kampnagel, Hamburg, Germany); Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival, Austria); and the Holland Festival (Amsterdam, The Netherlands).
In each location, LADY EATS APPLE appeared on some of the city’s most important stages. In Vienna for example, the Back to Back Theatre ensemble appeared at Theater an der Wien (The Vienna Theatre), where Beethoven, Schubert & Johann Strauss’ works were mounted. In Amsterdam, at the Stadsschouwburg, the show was the final performance of a month-long Festival at the former home of the national opera and ballet.
In all three cities, the work reimagined what is possible on so many levels: technically, dramatically, poetically, and in terms of who can perform and be lauded on the world’s most significant stages. We’re learning through our audience that the beauty of LADY EATS APPLE is in the delivery of this message, conveyed through a story of tenderness and the genuine acknowledgement of the fragility and vulnerability in us all.
‘LADY EATS APPLE is delicate and fragile piece, and therein lies its interest, beauty and focus […] it invites us to spend time with small human rituals and encounters. It is also about caring and the need to care for others’ – Audience member, Vienna
