CENTRAL GEELONG SCULPTURE COMMISSION

Project Outline

The City of Greater Geelong is seeking to commission a suitably qualified/experienced sculptor artist/team to develop a large scale highly interactive sculpture which celebrates Geelong as a cycling city. Geelong has a proud and long cycling history of professional and recreational/commuter cycling. Including Sir Hubert ‘Oppy’  Opperman and Cadel Evans. This project provides opportunities to reference cycling through a diverse range of symbolic or literal references.

The artwork will be the key Public Art feature in the Green Spine redevelopment of Malop St Central Geelong. The Green Spine will deliver significant change to central Geelong’s Malop Street, as a spectacular eight metre wide ‘botanic walk’ is built along the south side of the street. Funding of $8 million for stage 1 has been contributed by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the City of Greater Geelong and Regional Development Victoria. The botanic walk will include a rich mix of native, indigenous and exotic plantings as well as new seating options to create an enjoyable space for people to eat, sit, relax and watch the world go by. Bikes will have a higher level of priority, with one-way separated bike lanes on both sides of the street, making it safer for those exploring or commuting by bicycle.

The feature artwork will be a key structural element in the redevelopment and a kinetic sculptural outcome is considered highly desirable
