Bead Making Venetian Style with Murano Glass Master, Davide Penso

The year’s Festival of Glass hosted a range of workshops by international artist, Davide Penso, supported by the Arts and Culture Department at the City of Greater Geelong, with some members of the Beaders Guild of Geelong, fortunate to be amongst those to attend a three day solid bead making workshop.

While beaders Lea Yeo-Pfluger and Sandra Schmid, from the Guild, are adept at using beadweaving techniques to create beautiful jewellery, neither had a background in lampworking or bead making prior to attending the February event.

Participants in Davide’s class ranged from novices like Lea and Sandra, to experienced lampworkers and were taken through the some of the skills requisite in turning, glass melted at high temperatures, into decorated solid beads.

Davide proved a very generous teacher with students treated to an experience that included many displays his extraordinary glass working skills including glass blowing and sculptural skills in addition to a number of highly technical decoration methods.

A presentation outlining the workshop content accompanied by a display of beads created by novice participants will be held at the Beaders Guild meeting on August 6th at the Guild’s monthly meeting venue at 89 Autumn Street, Geelong West.
