James graduated from the John Bolton Theatre School in 1996. He then co-foundered the comedy physical theatre troupe “The 4 Noels”. The company devised and performed narrative musical comedy shows which were performed in festivals around Australia, New Zealand and Edinburgh for eight years during which time they were twice nominated for the Melbourne Comedy Festival’s Barry Award. Also the 4 Noels devised shorter works for the “Comedy Festival Road Show” which toured Australia and Asia.
He is a solo theatre practitioner devising his first solo show for the 2005 Melbourne fringe. A rewritten version mounted at the La Mama theatre in 2007 was subsequently nominated for a Green Room award. He has gone on to devise two further shows the most recent being ‘The Blueform’ that premiered at La Mama theatre in 2015.
Co-foundering the devised theatre ensemble ‘Co13’ in 2005, James is the company’s director. The Company has devised and performed numerous independent works as is currently developing, in partnership with the Arts Centre Melb, a adaptation of Macbeth for teens for 2016.
James has worked with Back to Back Theatre since 2007 as a guest director and workshop facilitator.
James taught and directed at the Victoria University’s performance course for 4 years and for three years at the National Institute of Circus Arts.
He was also an Associate Artist with the Courthouse Youth Arts Program in Geelong from 2013-15.
