Fancy a Classic French Film and just can’t get enough?
…I know I sure do, and Alliance Francaise de Geelong has done it again…
This beautiful black and white film has been praised by film makers and critics the world over.
Still guessing? Yes, it’s Truffaut’s The 400 Blows [Quatre Cents Coups] launched the Nouvelle Vogue and paved the way for some of cinema’s most important and influential directors. This film is widely considered one of the best French films in the history of cinema. A factoid you may not know is that the film features the extraordinary talent of Jean-Pierre Léaud, as the rebellious Antoine, a character based on Truffaut himself!
Twelve year old Antoine Doinel has troubles at home and at school. Ignored and neglected by his parents, his relationship with his mother is further strained when he discovers that she has taken a secret lover. Added to this, his school teachers have written him off as a troublemaker, and, with luck seemingly never on his side, Antoine always ends up being blamed for bad behaviour. Finding refuge only in his love of cinema, Antoine soon finds it necessary to break free, and discover what the world can offer outside of the confines of his everyday life.
Les Quatre Cents Coups, François Truffaut and Jean-Pierre Léaud were nominated for many awards, and won several, both in France and overseas, e.g. the Academy Awards, the BAFTA Awards, and last but not least, at the Cannes Film Festival.
