MARCO LUCCIO: New York Postcards
9 April @ 9:00 am - 20 April @ 4:00 pm
Artist Talk, Book Launch and Exhibition of Postcards and Cityscapes from Manhattan.
Award winning artist Marco Luccio will present an Artist Talk at the Geelong Book Launch of NEW YORK POSTCARDS at Metropolis Gallery 11am-12pm Tuesday 9 April.
NEW YORK POSTCARDS is a 64 page hardcover book and its launch will be accompanied by an exhibition of Luccio’s original postcards and cityscapes from Manhattan continuing until 20 April.
NEW YORK POSTCARDS began ten years ago when Marco began collecting used postcards and envelopes from New York’s flea markets and second hand shops, drawn by their fragile beauty and the ephemeral quality of the stories they contained. Now the previously disposable histories are enshrined in an enduring art, layered with sketches, paintings and prints inspired by the artist’s drawing excursions to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They are a rich and fascinating collection of mixed media works, overflowing with Luccio’s irrepressible energy and with delightful references to the figures of Picasso and Modigliani as well as classical Greek and Roman sculpture, often leaving tantalising glimpses of the hand-written messages, stamps and postmarks underneath.
Marco Luccio has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally and his work is represented in over 40 public and corporate collections including the New York Public Library, the Museum of the City of New York, the National Gallery of Australia, and more. He has held 49 solo exhibitions, including three major solo shows in New York and has exhibited in 150 group, curated and award shows. Luccio’s work, including pieces from NEW YORK POSTCARDS, has been shortlisted for many major awards including twice for both the Dobell Prize for Drawing in 2009 and 2010, and the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing in 2013 and 2016.
