Geelong artist Steve Salo’s upcoming exhibition ‘Portraits’ is a contemporary reimagining of works by master painters. It features portraits of artists, a series of postcard-size works and about 20 portraits on spoons that pay homage to revered artists and paintings.
Steve Salo’s profile as a contemporary artist continues to grow with paintings shortlisted in prestigious prizes across Australia. In 2016 and 2018 he was a finalist in the Salon des Refusés (selected from the Archibald Prize) at the National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney. In 2016 he was a finalist in the Len Fox Painting Award at Castlemaine Art Gallery; Kogarah Art Prize (Commended); Waverley Art Prize and the Korea-Australia Arts Foundation Art Prize. In 2015 he was shortlisted for the Mosman Art Prize, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Prospect Portrait Prize, John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize (Highly Commended) and won Best Oil in the Hobsons Bay Art Show.
Through the visual voice of painting I communicate emotion – from hope, joy and calm, to disappointment, sorrow and inner turmoil. We are complex of mind and spirit. My intent as a contemporary portrait artist is to explore the human psyche through painting these complexities. I am interested in portraying this aspect rather than focusing on the surface level alone.
