The City of Greater Geelong is seeking to commission a suitably qualified/experienced sculptor artist/team to develop an engaging sculpture which forms a key part of the cultural identity of the Leopold Community and Hub as an integrated facility.

Project Outline:

The City of Greater Geelong is seeking to commission a suitably qualified/experienced sculptor artist/team to develop an engaging sculpture which forms a key part of the cultural identity of the Leopold Community and Hub as an integrated facility.

The value of the commission is $45,000. The artwork will be the key Public Art feature in the precinct.

Leopold Community Hub is a long held community aspiration to realise a central heart for service delivery and community activity in Leopold.

Leopold Hub includes:

  • Stage 1 – a child & family centre with kindergarten, maternal & child health, long day care and family support services (completed)
  • Stage 2 – library, community  & learning centre,  seniors activities, youth programs and multipurpose spaces, changing places and open space landscaping to enable community events in the parkland.(under construction)

Leopold is the Gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula and enjoys a strong connection to the Barwon River, Lake Connewarre and Corio Bay with view to You Yangs and Geelong.

Submissions

Artists are invited to submit information about their art practice and appropriate experience for consideration in the context of a two stage commissioning process.

Submissions should include a short biography outlining your art practice and recent relevant experience creating major artworks in the public realm, current CV (maximum 2 pages) and up to 5 images of your artwork and or webpage links for viewing examples of previously developed artworks. (Jpeg/Mpeg or video files – max 1Mb each).

Proposals must include a break down of expenses, and a conceptual framework/proposal for the project, which would be further developed/clarified with the successful artist/team. A visual representation of the proposed artwork is essential.

Artists should familiarise themselves with the timeline below and confirm their availability to complete all requirements.

Selection

A Public Art Advisory Group (PAAG) consisting of internal and external stakeholders will award the commission to the successful artist/creative team after reviewing all appropriate applications. An artist presentation may be requested by the PAAG prior to making the final determination.

Proposals must include complete design brief and image of proposed work, construction, and installation methodology and timeframe for completion.

Project Budget

The total project budget is $45,000 (forty five thousand dollars) exclusive of GST. This amount is inclusive of artist’s fees, travel, accommodation and expenses, and all costs associated with construction and delivery and installation of the artwork.

The successful Artist/team will be required to attend site visits and briefings.

Scope of Work

Successful Artists will be required to:

  1. Register on Council’s Preferred Supplier System. This will require Public Liability Insurance cover ($10,000,000) if successful;
  2. Submit preliminary artwork concepts to the Commissioner for consideration;
  3. Supply a detailed design, engineering specification of the work;
  4. Liaise with and attend meetings with Arts & Culture Department staff as deemed necessary through development of the project;
  5. Participate in publicity or promotional events and media interviews where appropriate and as mutually agreed upon by both Parties in advance and in writing;
  6. Submit Artwork attribution and title;
  7. Supply a maintenance plan for the work
  8. Provide all requested information and complete all tasks in a timely manner and in accordance with any timelines and deliverable dates set forth in the contractual
