We the Makers Create Program: For artists and craftspeople to share their skills

We the Makers Create is a new digital experience from the National Wool Museum Geelong.  Building on the success of the Designer Showcase digital exhibition it provides a platform for artists and craftspeople to share their skills and inspire others to start making.  For the community it provides a wealth of ideas, technical skills, and fun activities for the whole family.

We the Makers Create responds to our adjusted lives as a result of the pandemic.  It encourages us to make, mend, refashion and repurpose from home.  While we collectively reflect on the challenges to our health, communities and economies, We the Makers Create offers a new perspective to our fast lives and fast fashion.  One where we can be slower, thrifty and creative with how we consume fashion.

The website comprises of four sections to teach, inspire, play and share:

Courses – this series offer detailed step-by-step guides build technical skills and confidence to experiment with sustainable fashion concepts.  The first course released explores creative mending and offers participants both useful practical skills and creative ideas to give their clothes longevity.  Future courses released over the coming months will cover ideas such as refashioning old garments and making jewellery from waste.

Inspiration @ Home celebrates creativity and cultural arts.  These shorter videos give viewers an insight into techniques and crafts they may not have seen before.  The first videos released explore fabric gift wrapping, Iraqi embroidery and Karen weaving with local Geelong artists.

Mini Makers is a section especially for kids and families.  It encourages making from a young age with simple and fun activities using yarn.  There are videos, matching stories and activity guides to give families the confidence to get making together.

Share Your Creation is a public gallery for everyone to explore and share.  Making is not just for the professionals.  This gallery encourages people at all stages of their making journey to share their creations and inspire others.  Emerging artists can promote themselves by adding links to their websites and social media accounts.  Everyone can be inspired by the breadth of ideas and skills.

Recognising the impact of the pandemic on artists and the broader community, all content in the website is available free through support from the National Wool Museum and the City of Greater Geelong.
